Neighborhood
Historic cities have timeless appeal. For the last 100 years, Asheville has welcomed travelers from far and wide. This small city situated in the in the French Broad River valley surrounded by the picturesque Appalachian Mountains has long been a destination for not only its natural beauty, but also rich and diverse history.
Many built cities of today pale in comparison to Asheville’s landmark architectural gems, such as the neoclassical Jackson Building or art deco City Building and the once S & W Cafeteria, adjacent to Pritchard Park, in addition to the stunning backdrop of the sometimes mysterious oldest mountains in the world.
In the booming years leading up to the Great Depression, Asheville saw an explosion of built infrastructure.
Located amongst these iconic representations of Asheville’s built history is Downton Annie.
Just off Patton Avenue on North Ann Street, and half a block away from Haywood Street, travelers will discover a stylish den on the edge the eclectic downtown area.
There is a social service agency located across street, one of many in the downtown that serves the homeless population. Homeward Bound is a local non-profit that moves people into permanent housing. While the shelter closed nearly 10 years ago, the agency currently provides invaluable support and advisory services in the mornings.
The completely renovated exterior honors the historic past, while the interior invites today’s guests to take advantage of the modern furnishings, new appliances and fully stocked kitchen with all of the essential cookware and utensils.
